Management and Leadership Courses The Complete Guide

Management and leadership courses are everywhere… Online.  In Person.  Accredited.  Non-Accredited.  Short courses.  Apprenticeships. Masterclasses. Bootcamps.

So, how do you know which one to choose?

Here’s our take on it…

Table of Contents

Online vs In Person Management and Leadership Courses

Many employers don’t want their team members going out of the office and so suggest an online course.

In reality, what this means is someone sitting at their desk with headphones on trying their best to concentrate whilst they are being interrupted by people, emails, and phone calls.

Online courses have their place, no one would deny that.

But if you are looking to get one of your team trained in the skills required to be a manager and leader, it’s far better they attend an in-person course where they can mix with others and focus on what they are being taught.

In-person courses are also far more interactive and it’s so much easier to build a relationship with both the tutor and other learners to maximise the benefits of the course for both the individual and their employer.

The other factor to note is that online courses consistently have a higher non-completion rate than in-person management and leadership courses by up to 20%!

Accredited vs Non-accredited Management and Leadership Courses

Many training consultants will offer management and leadership courses which are not accredited.

Some will be excellent.  Others won’t be.

Now the same can be said for accredited courses – but here you know the theories and models being taught are researched and proven, rather than just being taken from one individual’s experience.

The other benefit of an accredited course is the qualification the individual learner receives.  A qualification which demonstrates to the world their competency and also allows them to feel valued by their employer who wants them to have a membership of an accredited body.

After saying all that, Whyy? Change offers both accredited and non-accredited courses.

Here’s an example of why.

We recently created a bespoke short course (eight half days) for a global manufacturing company which was based on the Chartered Management Institute’s materials, taking the most relevant parts for the learners so that they received maximum benefit from the course.  (For them to have gained a qualification we would have had to cover areas which would have had no impact on their roles and so it would have either made the course longer or not covered essential topics.)

Selecting Management and Leadership Courses

Employers

If you are an employer selecting a course for one of your team, then the most vital thing to consider is what skills and knowledge they genuinely need.

You then have to be really honest and ask what the best learning environment for the individual will be.

You might want to keep them in the office whilst they undertake the course, but will that be the best for them?!

Is there a way they can genuinely avoid interruptions and distractions?

We know through our incredibly high success rate that the learners who come to Whyy? Change value their time away from their roles so they can apply themselves to the new learning.

It allows them to hear others’ experiences (even if from the same organisation) and get involved in interactive sessions and activities.

And all that benefits you, their employer, as they feel valued and are eager to return to the workplace and implement what they have learned.

Learner

If you are looking for a suitable course for yourself, attending an in-person course may feel slightly uncomfortable.  Meeting new people in a new place.

But all the most worthwhile personal developments happen outside our comfort zones.

Being a manager and leader of people will challenge you in ways you do not expect, whether you are a first-time team leader or a senior leader within your organisation.

Being away from the workplace will give you time and space to think clearly and consider things you would never have time to in your day-to-day role.

You’ll mix with others who are at the same stage in their career as you are. You’ll hear different perspectives, experiences, and ideas. You’ll consider how the learning can apply to your workplace and what it can improve. You’ll leave every session enthused to get back and make a real difference.

Management and Leadership Courses – The Tutor

One of the biggest considerations when selecting a course is the background of the tutor.

For some subjects having a tutor who is familiar with the course materials, and can deliver them in an interesting way, is enough.

For management and leadership skills, however, you need someone who has lived them… bought the cap and worn the t-shirt until it’s threadbare!

You need an experienced manager and leader… someone who’s made the mistakes, lived the chaos that managing people can deliver, who’s managed a team through good times and bad, managed major change and restructuring, has recruited and performance managed out… an experienced professional who can provide examples and help their learners consider all aspects of their role.

This is the exact reason Whyy? Change only employs experienced practitioners that the chartered bodies our courses are accredited by deem appropriately qualified and experienced to deliver.  And they are all people who have personality!  No boring, dry delivery here!

Short course or Apprenticeship

Management and leadership courses are available in varying lengths.

Short bespoke courses, accredited or unaccredited, may be exactly what you need.

However, a full apprenticeship will often be more appropriate.

CMI apprenticeships are delivered by Whyy? Change at Level 3 (Team Leader), Level 5  (Operations Manager), and Level 7 (Senior Leader).

As someone moves up in their career, management and leadership training becomes essential.

Just because an individual has been brilliant at their previous role, it does not necessarily mean they will be a great manager and leader of people.

And we’ve all experienced poor people managers, haven’t we?

They can be the difference between the success of a business and its failure.

A poor manager of people can easily create a workforce lacking motivation and a blame culture, resulting in a high turnover of staff.  All costing the company money.

It is true some people are born leaders… they have a natural presence people respond to… but without the appropriate training, they can lead people in completely the wrong direction!
